The Art Of Tile Pairing In NYC Apartments

Great NYC tile design is all about the pairing.

Table of contents

Designing tile for a NYC apartment renovation means balancing visual impact with real-world performance. The goal is a bathroom or kitchen that feels elevated and intentional, where pattern and bold finishes elevate a compact Manhattan footprint. The art is in the pairing. Great tile design depends less on any single selection and more on how wall and floor materials work together across tone, scale, texture, and durability.

About Gallery KBNY

Gallery KBNY is an award-winning, full-service design-build firm specializing in the architecture, interior design, and renovation of apartments, co-ops, condominiums, townhomes, and lofts across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our integrated team of architects, designers, contractors, and project managers — with a founding partner involved in every project — manages every phase from board approvals and DOB permitting through design and construction. Because architecture, design, permitting, and construction are coordinated under one roof, the process remains streamlined, accountable, and transparent from start to finish. Our work has been recognized by Forbes, The New York Times, Architectural Digest, and Inc., and we have received Houzz Best of Design & Service seven consecutive years, along with 100+ five-star client reviews.

At Gallery, we plan tile the way we plan a layout. We start with how the space gets used day to day, then choose materials with our clients that support their life while respecting the home's architecture.

How to Pair Tile
The Balance Points
Decision
What to Balance
Contrast
A graphic floor reads best against quiet walls, so one surface leads and the other settles back
Finish
Polished surfaces bounce light, while matte and honed finishes feel soft and grounded
Scale
Large-format tile minimizes grout lines, and mosaics add texture and movement
Personality
Decide early where the moment lives, whether on the floor or a single accent
Great tile design depends less on any single selection and more on how wall and floor work together.

The early decisions set the tone, from how much contrast to strike to where a single moment of personality should live. Settling these first lets the finished room feel tailored and calm.

[#1]Carrara + Nero Checkerboard Floors With Classic White Subway Walls | Tribeca Renovation at 9 Murray Street[#1]

In this 9 Murray Street bathroom, the tile pairing is all about contrast done right. The Carrara Pure Polished and Nero Marquina Polished porcelain (12x24 from Cancos, part of Nemo Tile & Stone’s Marvel Stone collection) form a bold black-and-white checkerboard floor, while 3x12 White Subway tile from Nemo’s Traditions Collection keeps the walls clean and bright. The floor adds graphic energy and pre-war character, while the walls add calm, height, and light. The resulting space feels timeless, not busy. View our full Tribeca renovation at 9 Murray Street.

[#2]Pantry Backsplash with Antique Delft Tiles And Savoy Subway Framing | Manhattan Apartment Renovation at 91 Central Park West[#2]

In the pantry at 91 Central Park West, the backsplash becomes a true focal point by pairing heirloom Delft tiles with clean, classic framing. Our clients had 100 plus year old hand painted tiles from the Netherlands they wanted to honor, so we designed the built-in pantry and wine rack around them, then sourced Ann Sacks Savoy Classic Field Tile (3 by 6, Ricepaper, polished ceramic) to create a crisp subway surround. That matching field tile, set with bright white grout, lets the antique scenes read like artwork instead of getting lost in pattern, while the custom teal millwork adds tailored, period specific depth. The result is a pantry that feels both personal and architectural, historic tiles preserved in a fresh, functional composition that looks original to the pre war home with a modern, polished finish. [#3]Emerald Green Cemento Shower Walls With Calacatta Penny Round Marble Floor | Upper East Side Co-Op Renovation at 55 East End Ave[#3]

At 55 East End, this bathroom makes a bold statement by pairing saturated emerald walls with a crisp, classic marble floor. The Cemento 2 by 8 Emerald Green porcelain tiles are stacked vertically with soft French gray grout, creating clean lines that feel taller, more architectural, and slightly handcrafted thanks to their glossy, lightly uneven surface. Against that rich green backdrop, the TileBar Calacatta one inch penny round mosaic floor brings in brightness and movement, with white stone and subtle gray and gold veining that keeps the space from feeling heavy. Together, the two finishes strike a balance between drama and restraint. The walls deliver depth and personality, while the penny rounds add a timeless, spa-like lift at your feet - tying the whole shower into a refined, high impact look. [#4]Micro Moons Mosaic Floor With Bianco Dolomiti Marble Walls | Chelsea Co-Op Renovation at 107 W 25th St.[#4]

In the hallway bathroom at 107 West 25th, the tile story is all about quiet luxury with a small hit of personality. The walls are wrapped in honed Bianco Dolomiti marble in a clean 12 by 24 format, giving the room a crisp, gallery calm backdrop with soft gray veining and a smooth matte finish. Underneath, the White Mixed Finish Stone Waterjet Mosaic in the same Bianco Dolomiti base adds movement and charm through its micro moon pattern and subtle mixed finishes. Because both surfaces share the same marble family and a matching white grout, the space feels cohesive and airy, while the floor brings just enough texture and visual rhythm to make the design pop. The result is classic and bright, but with a thoughtful, tailored edge that makes the small hallway bath feel intentionally designed. View our full Chelsea co-op renovation at 107 W 25th St.

[#5]Chevron Shower Floor With Glem White Porcelain Walls | Manhattan Condo Renovation In The Gotham at 170 E 87th[#5]

In the shower at 170 East 87th, the tile pairing leans clean and modern while still feeling warm and dimensional. The walls are finished in Porcelanosa Glem White porcelain in a large 24 by 48 format, which minimizes grout lines and creates a smooth, spa-like envelope with a soft stone look. On the floor, rich Porcelanosa World Amsterdam Chevron mosaics in White introduce pattern and traction without disrupting the calm palette. The chevron layout adds quiet movement on the flooring, giving the shower a subtle design moment that complements the oversized wall tile rather than competing with it. Together, the two surfaces strike a balance of simplicity and texture, making the space feel bright, elevated, and intentionally detailed from top to bottom. [#6]Calacatta Azur Walls With Phantasm Winter Sky Mosaic Floors | Upper West Side Luxury Condo Renovation at 220 Riverside[#6]

In the hallway bathroom at 220 Riverside Drive, the tile scheme pairs calm, marble like walls with a bold geometric floor for a space that feels both airy and artful. The walls are wrapped in TileBar Calacatta Azur polished porcelain in a 12 by 24 format, giving the shower a clean, continuous surface with soft white tone and sweeping blue gray veining. That subtle movement sets a serene backdrop and lets the light bounce around the room. Below, the Phantasm Winter Sky polished marble mosaic brings in contrast and personality, using triangles that form six pointed stars in a mix of Nero, Thassos, Blue Celeste, Blue Macauba, and Carrara. The result is a balanced composition, offering refined and quiet vibes vertically, with geometric gleam on the floor, all tied together by shared blue and gray notes that make the whole bathroom feel intentional, elevated, and quietly dramatic. [#7]Asian Statuary Beveled Marble Mosaic Backsplash | Boutique Co-Op Renovation In Manhattan at 230 E 50th St[#7]

In our pied-à-terre renovation at 230 East 50th Street, the kitchen backsplash leans into quiet luxury through texture rather than color. TileBar’s Asian Statuary beveled 2 by 4 polished marble mosaic creates a classic brick rhythm, but the bevel adds gentle shadow lines that keep the wall from feeling flat. The stone’s soft white base is laced with natural gray and subtle gold veining, giving the kitchen movement that reads refined and timeless against the crisp cabinetry. Finished with white grout, the pattern stays clean and seamless, while the polished surface catches light and makes the whole vignette feel brighter, taller, and more elevated without stealing the spotlight from the millwork. [#8]Ribbed Gray Porcelain Shower With Greige Large Format Floor | Manhattan Condo Renovation At The Chelsea Mercantile at 252 Seventh Ave[#8]

For the stunning shower design at 252 Seventh Avenue, we paired two large format porcelains that feel calm, architectural, and built for daily wear. On the walls, TileBar Kenridge Ribbon Gray runs in a 24 by 48 matte slab with subtle wood look variation and a 3D ribbed face, giving the enclosure soft movement without visual noise. On the floor, Lines Greige in the same oversized 24 by 48 format keeps the floor seamless and modern, with a slightly faded industrial tone that grounds the space and hides everyday traffic. Finished in matching Mobe Pearl grout, the wall and floor read as one cohesive envelope, balancing quiet texture above with clean, durable simplicity below. The combination makes the shower feel taller and more spa-like. View our Manhattan condo renovation at The Chelsea Mercantile at 252 Seventh Ave.

[#9]Kids En Suite Glow Tile | Manhattan Condo Renovation At The Chelsea Mercantile at 252 Seventh Ave[#9]

In the kids en suite bath, we leaned into a clean, playful shine with Nemo Glow Snow in a glossy 2 by 10 ceramic. Laid as a smooth field and finished with Vivid White grout, the tile reads bright and timeless at first glance, then comes alive as light shifts across the surface. Glow’s milk finish and subtle holographic character create a soft iridescent rhythm that keeps the space feeling fresh and a little magical without overwhelming the room. The slim, elongated format adds gentle proportion and movement, giving this kids bathroom a crisp backdrop that feels fun now and easy to grow into later. [#10]Prism Rosa And Cloe Green Guest Bath | Co-Op Loft Renovation In Tribeca at 335 Greenwich St.[#10]

In the guest bath at 335 Greenwich Ave, we paired two tiles that feel bold yet balanced. The Prism Rosa marble mosaic floor brings instant personality with its faceted mix of forest green, blush pink, and black, and because each sheet varies slightly, the pattern feels lively and one of a kind without looking chaotic. Wrapping the walls in glossy Bedrosian Cloe Green 2.5 x 8 tile, stacked vertically, echoes the green tones in the floor while adding height and a calm, clean backdrop. Soft Lunar grout keeps the walls seamless, letting the mosaic stay the focal point, so the room reads like a refined jewel box with just the right amount of play. View our full co-op loft renovation in Tribeca at 335 Greenwich St.

[#11]Havasar Grigio Marble Mosaic Laundry Room Floor | Co-Op Loft Renovation In Tribeca at 335 Greenwich St.[#11]

In the 335 Greenwich Ave laundry room, the Havasar Grigio honed marble mosaic sets a crisp, graphic tone the moment you step in. Cut in a hexagon waterjet pattern, the mix of Nero Marquina, Carrara, and Bardiglio creates a subtle 3D effect and a lively play of black, white, and gray that feels classic but never flat. The honed finish keeps the design grounded and slip friendly for daily traffic, while the bright white grout sharpens each edge so the geometry reads clean and intentional against the surrounding millwork and dark accents. The result is a polished, high contrast floor that elevates a transitional space into a true design moment. View our full co-op loft renovation in Tribeca at 335 Greenwich St.

[#12]Diesel Camp Rock Gray Shower Walls | Lower East Side Co-Op Renovation at 413 Grand St[#12]

For the shower in our 413 Grand Street renovation, we used Diesel Camp in Rock Gray to create a moody, tailored envelope that feels both modern and quietly tactile. The 4 by 12 matte ceramic tiles are installed in a straight stack, letting the collection’s textile inspired stone texture take center stage without visual clutter. That subtle, fabric-like surface gives the walls depth and softness, while the durable ceramic body handles daily steam and wear with ease. Finished in a French Gray grout, the joints disappear into the field, so the shower reads as one continuous, spa calm backdrop that elevates the niches and black fixtures instead of competing with them. [#13]Carrara Subway Walls With Nova Lynx Hexagon Floor | Upper West Side Pre-War Co-Op Renovation at 801 West End Ave[#13]

At 801 West End Avenue, the shower tile story is all about timeless marble done with a little quiet geometry. The walls are wrapped in Carrara 4x12 polished marble subway tile, a classic white field with soft gray veining that bounces light around the enclosure and keeps the room feeling bright, clean, and architectural. Below, Nova Lynx hexagon marble brings in a subtle pattern shift, using polished gray micro marble to add texture and grip without breaking the calm. Together, the crisp horizontal lines of the Carrara and the tailored hex mosaic create a balanced, pre-war appropriate look that feels elevated, enduring, and naturally cohesive from wall to floor. [#faq]Frequently Asked Questions About Tile Design In NYC Renovations[#faq]

Is marble practical for a NYC bathroom, or will it stain?

Marble works beautifully in a NYC bathroom when the finish and the sealing match the use. A honed finish hides etching and water spots better than a high polish, which is why it suits shower floors and high-touch surfaces, while polished marble shines on walls and lower-traffic areas. Sealing on a regular schedule protects against staining from oils and acidic products, and a few simple care habits keep the stone looking its best for years. For clients who prefer a fully carefree surface, marble-look porcelain delivers a similar aesthetic with less upkeep.

How do you keep a bold tile pairing from overwhelming a small bathroom?

The reliable approach lets one surface lead while the other settles back. A graphic floor reads best against quiet walls, and a saturated wall color pairs with a calmer floor, so the eye always has somewhere to rest. Scale matters too, since large-format wall tile reduces grout lines and keeps a compact room feeling open, with mosaics reserved for a single moment of texture. A consistent grout tone and a shared material family hold everything together, which is what keeps a strong pairing feeling tailored in a tight footprint.

What tile stands up best to heavy use in a NYC home?

For high-traffic areas, porcelain and honed natural stone hold up best. Porcelain resists moisture and everyday wear, which makes it a strong choice for entries and busy kitchens or bathrooms. Honed marble and other honed stones bring a luxe look while masking the micro-scratches and etching that show readily on a polished surface. In wet areas, a smaller tile or mosaic adds grout lines that improve grip, a quiet practical benefit that also reads as a design choice.

Can new tile be matched to original pre-war or heirloom details?

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. When clients have heirloom pieces, like the hundred-year-old Delft tiles we built a pantry around at 91 Central Park West, we design the surrounding field and millwork to frame them so they read as the focal point. Matching new tile to surviving pre-war detail relies on getting the field tile's proportion and grout tone right, so the new work reads as though it has always been there. Sourcing the right complement often means specialty showrooms and a longer lead time, which is worth building into the schedule early.

How early should tile be selected and ordered for a NYC renovation?

Tile belongs among the earliest material decisions, ideally locked before demolition wraps. Specialty stone and imported tile often carry lead times of several weeks to a few months, and a backordered selection can stall an otherwise on-schedule project. Ordering early also allows a slab or batch to be reviewed in person, since natural stone varies piece to piece and the veining you approve should be the veining that arrives. Building this into the schedule keeps the install on track once the walls are ready.
