For our clients at 61 West 9th Street, what began as a desire to refresh the kitchen and flooring of their Manhattan pied-à-terre evolved into a comprehensive renovation that touched nearly every room. Our goal? Modernize the apartment while honoring the bones, introducing refined materials, improved functionality, and a cohesive mid-century modern aesthetic throughout.
The renovation focused on new flooring throughout, a fully updated kitchen, custom millwork including radiator covers and living room built-ins, an electrical upgrade, fireplace updates, new light fixtures, and the addition of HVAC.

Though compact in its galley configuration, the kitchen received a full renovation featuring updated cabinetry, millwork, and stone surfaces. A standout material choice — Chantilly Quartzite, sourced from Ciot in a polished finish — was introduced at the fireplace and carried through the kitchen, creating a sense of material continuity that ties the apartment together. Underfoot, 24"x24" Kado Sand Cement porcelain tile in a natural finish and staggered pattern grounds the space, finished with a Bostik Mobe Pearl grout and a stainless Schluter termination edge.
Cabinetry is by Miralis Tribeca in an S-634 Collingwood exterior finish with maple interiors and clear glass upper cabinets with finished interiors — a refined, modern palette that keeps the compact kitchen feeling airy and intentional. Matching Edgecliff 12" appliance pulls and cabinet hardware carry the detailing consistently throughout.
Appliances were selected for both performance and aesthetic cohesion, including a Jennair 30" gas cooktop with five sealed burners, a Jennair Rise 30" single wall oven, and a Miele 30" panel-ready smart refrigerator. A Rohl Lux single-hole kitchen faucet and Delta Lorelai 23" workstation sink round out the package.
The adjacent dining area is anchored by a Sean Lavin Belterra Chandelier (the centerpiece of one of our most popular Instagram videos), complemented by existing wall sconces that were retained and integrated into the updated scheme.

The living room serves as the heart of the apartment and its most design-forward space. A structural challenge presented itself in the form of an off-centered window — the result of existing beams — which required a creative millwork solution to restore visual symmetry. On one side, existing columns were clad in paneling; on the other, open recessed shelving was built out to mirror the composition. The interiors of the shelves were painted in a deep gray-navy tone to echo the fireplace surround, lending depth and intentionality to the space.
The fireplace itself is clad in Explosion Blue Quartzite, a dramatic, veined stone that anchors the room and informs the deep navy tones carried throughout the millwork and shelving. See close-up video of the fireplace via our IG.
Knurled hardware from REVILL adds a tactile, mid-century-appropriate detail to the built-ins, while a pair of Anteriors Julius 2 wall sconces provide layered ambient lighting.
The millwork color was carefully matched to the flooring finish, which is a detail that required close coordination but ultimately delivers a seamlessly unified palette across surfaces.
New hardwood flooring was installed throughout the entry, living, dining, and bedrooms. Havwoods Presto 1-Strip Plank in the Platinum color group (a 4¾"-wide lacquered plank in lengths ranging from 31½" to 55⅛") brings warmth and continuity to every room. The floor finish was deliberately matched to the millwork color, creating a cohesive, considered feel from surface to surface. The window sills also use the elevated Explosion Blue Quartzite, subtly echoing the living room fireplace and tying the material story together. View video of the sills on IG.
